Canada Post has announced that it has received strike notifications from the union representing approximately 55,000 postal workers, indicating that operations may come to a halt by the end of this work week. Picketing could start as early as midnight this Friday according to reports following communications between Canada Post's workers union and the Crown Corporation.
A potential work stoppage could significantly impact millions of residents and businesses that rely on the service, which handles over two billion letters and around 300 million parcels annually. Canada Post has expressed concerns that such a disruption would exacerbate its already precarious financial situation, urging both parties to prioritize reaching an agreement.
Earlier on Monday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers stated in an email that it is "still in the process of negotiating collective agreements" for its members, which include nearly 23,000 mail carriers. Additionally, a report released on Friday regarding Canada Post pointed out its struggling business model and suggested essential reforms, such as discontinuing daily door-to-door letter delivery for individual homes.
If unionized Canada Post workers take to the picket lines this Friday it would mark the second time in under six months postal services stopped due to a strike. 55,000 Canada Post employees walked off the job for 32 days in November and December of 2024. In the event of a national labour disruption, mail and parcels will not be delivered and no new items will be accepted until the disruption is over.
